Synod

Synod
Council of a patriarch (q.v.). Patriarchal synods were, in effect, regional church councils whose doctrinal decrees were authoritative, especially after the schism of 1054 (q.v.). The patriarch of Constantinople (q.v.) presided over a permanent resident synod of patriarchal clergy and metropolitan bishops (qq.v.) that was the means through which patriarchal power was exercised. Patriarch Nicholas III Grammatikos (q.v.) opposed any interference to his own power over the synod, since it was chiefly through the permanent synod that the power of the patriarch of Constantinople emanated.
